Escaping Sand Traps with Golf Sand Wedges
Thursday, February 26th, 2009While taking flying lessons in the 1930s, golf Hall of Fame member Gene Sarazen thought up the design for the modern golf sand wedges, which he developed for several months. Its extra bounce of about 10 to 16 degrees, heel-toe camber, and more sole width all help a player maneuver out of a sand trap.
A sand wedge has a high level of loft, usually ranging from 54 to 58 degrees, which launches the ball at a high trajectory. This allows golfers to hit their target better as the ball stops quicker on the green with little role. Its shorter shaft allows the ball to stop faster as the players strike the ball with a more upright swing and aggressive blow.
Aside from being valuable in escaping from sand traps and improving accuracy, golf sand wedges are also useful in making recovery shots and can also be used on grass and fairway.
